Plot
Three segments adapted from Richard Matheson short stories.
- Julie. A college student obsessively infatuated with his prim teacher ends up arranging a despicable plan to bend her to his will. But things will turn out to be somewhat more complicated…
- Millicent and Therese. Sibling rivalry between sisters with antithetical personalities: one repressed and prudish, the other free-spirited and seductive.
- Amelia. A young anthropologist acquires a small tribal idol depicting a Zuni warrior. The parchment contained in the doll’s packaging warns against removing the small chain wrapped around its chest which prevents the spirit of the hunter from reawakening. An unfortunate situation will render the warning useless.

Critique
5Anthology horror film originally conceived as a pilot for a TV series, but never picked up, “Trilogy of Terror” has taken on a certain cult renown over the years. The credit mainly goes to the final segment which, thanks to an unexpected burst of supernatural horror (the diabolical Zuni doll running from one room to another armed with a knife is unforgettable), somewhat redeems the project, infusing it with a decent whiff of rhythm and originality.
In fact, the first two episodes fall victim to the typical restraints of TV productions (mainly moderation and slow pacing) wrapping up with barely believable plot twists (the first episode) or entirely predictable ones (the second). Beyond that, for a good two-thirds of the film, the so-called “terror” promised in the title is AWOL: instead we seem to get a light-weight thriller built rather unimaginatively on a foundation of innocuous morbidness.
Karen Black, featured in a total of four different roles, reinforces her reputation as a versatile actress.

- When they get to the motel, Chad hides his true identity by signing the register with a name that no genuine horror fan would fail to notice: “Jonathan Harker”.
