Plot
Steve Malone, a chemist for the EPA, brings his family along when he’s sent to a military base in Alabama to check for environmental contaminates as a possible cause of recent mass hysteria among base personnel. He quickly detects high levels of toxins in the environment, but they’re difficult to identify and impossible to explain. The cause? Oh, just another “quiet” invasion by the same old emotionless aliens.

Critique
4.5The competent Abel Ferrara turns his attention to a sci-fi classic, directing a rather loose adaptation of Jack Finney’s novel “The Body Snatchers” (1954), which in turn owes a great debt to “The Puppet Masters” (1951) by Robert A. Heinlein.
It wasn’t such a bad idea to change the setting of the action from a sleepy small town to a closed and closely monitored military base, but it’s a shame that any critique of the military’s obtusity as well as the ecological message that pops up throughout the story both end up getting short shrift in what feels more like an extended TV episode.
From an uncompromising auteur who over the years has given us gems such as “Ms .45” (1981) and “Bad Lieutenant” (1992), it doesn’t seem unreasonable to expect something far better than this. An insipid rehash lacking any creative flair, “Body Snatchers” mostly serves to demonstrate that Ferrara and sci-fi are like oil and water (we’ll get further confirmation with the soporific “New Rose Hotel”, 1998).

- Body snatchers previously paid us a visit in Don Siegel’s masterpiece “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1956) as well as its respectable remake “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” (1978). After this film, they’ll make yet another appearance in the forgettable “The Invasion” (2007) by Oliver Hirschbiegel and James McTeigue.
