Plot
Henry Creedlow is a stressed-out wage slave at the mercy of an oppressive environment that constantly takes advantage of him. His wife is having an affair, his friend is cheating him financially, and his supervisor never stops ridiculing him. He suffers through it all, unable to react, until one morning something strange occurs: a white mask covers his face and there’s no way to remove it.
This new development gives Creedlaw the chance to put an end to his frustrations, and he sets out on a bloody path to revenge.

Critique
4.5Seven years after “The Dark Half” (1993), George A. Romero returns to the director’s chair with a horrific thriller whose effectiveness as social allegory crashes and burns on a sloppy screenplay and made-for-television production values.
The hardly inspired acting of the protagonists (Peter Stormare’s over-the-top performance in the role of the sleazy, sex-crazed boss is extremely annoying) and the director’s fundamental indecision on what tone to maintain (slack periods alternate with needlessly frenzied scenes) make “Bruiser” one of the least successful works from a director who has previously given us films of much higher caliber.
The saving grace is its customary critique of the capitalistic world, looked upon as a monstrous, oppressive system that destabilizes weaker individuals’ self-identity by promoting rampant depersonalization coupled with the relentless need to get ahead. The dazzling finale seems to be an allusion to Brian De Palma’s “Phantom of the Paradise” (1974).
