Plot
Baron Zorn is convinced his two teenage offspring – Emil and Elizabeth – are mentally ill, and he keeps the brother and sister drugged and locked in separate rooms in his manor to prevent them from giving into the incestuous urges they apparently share.
After numerous experts and specialists prove unable to cure his children’s presumed illness, Zorn turns to the infamous Dr. Falkenberg who, as a fervent mesmerist, is convinced they need to pursue a treatment involving the stimulation “of a universal fluid, a force uniting all living things, which this magnetic apparatus can harness, to bring your innermost secrets to the surface“.
This inevitably leads to dark, dangerous realms…
A bloodlust coursed through me. I relish the thought, the very idea of blood.
Critique
7We’re kicking off the 1970s and British Hammer Films is trying to get in step with the times by abandoning the typically Gothic settings that had often characterized their earlier works and focusing heavily on the erotic realm instead. Peter Sykes, assisted by splendid cinematography, skillfully directs a film that, after a somewhat muted start, gradually becomes more engaging, leading to a simultaneously tragic and ambiguous conclusion.
Digging deeper, “Demons of the Mind” is basically a turbid and portentous drama disguised as a horror film where everything revolves around mental illness. It’s interesting to note how this core element takes on differing meanings depending on the individual characters’ point of view. We go from the metaphysical beliefs of Baron Zorn, convinced that a curse lingers over his bloodline, to the pseudo-psychoanalytic conjectures of the eccentric Dr. Falkenberg, played by the legendary Patrick Magee, with his talk about “dreams of sexual fear suppressed through guilt” and “He did what your fears and dreams made you want to do, but which your conscience mind could not do. They’re extensions of your being in some grotesque way“). Finally, we have the post-Enlightenment rationalism of Dr. Richter, the “official” spokesman of the medical-scientific community of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century.
The Church isn’t spared its share of caustic barbs, with its representative portrayed as a fanatic priest whose mad gibbering incites the “sheeple” to form a lynch mob to fight evil.

Quotes
- A bloodlust coursed through me. I relish the thought, the very idea of blood. Like my ancestors before me, I saw myself an evil demon of the forest, lusting to kill.
- I had to marry, have children, continue my line. But would they inherit the madness? The evil in my blood?
- The world will be a better place without me, and it won't even know that you died.
- Yes, and the blood and the nightmares... I drove her to madness and to suicide.
Trivia
- Shot in West Sussex towards the end of 1971, the film was distributed the following year on a double bill with Jim O’Connolly’s awful “Horror on Snape Island” (also known as “Tower of Evil”) (1972).
