Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Plot

Author: Alessandro Venditti
Adaptation: Kevan Houser

United States Air Force Brigadier General Jack D. Ripper, rabid anticommunist, goes off the deep end into paranoia, and without a legitimate order from the Pentagon, dispatches a squadron of B-52 bombers armed with H-bombs to target the USSR.

Realizing the gravity of the situation and his inability to stop the bombers, the US president reaches out to the Soviet premier on the “hotline” in a last-ditch attempt to avoid disaster. Meanwhile, Captain Lionel Mandrake of the UK Royal Air Force confronts an unhinged Ripper in a futile attempt to get him to call off the attack.

Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.

A scathing black comedy, “Dr. Strangelove” is rightly considered one of the absolute pinnacles of political satire to ever hit the big screen.

Loosely based on a (serious) thriller written by Peter George, the inspired Kubrick — demonstrating that he’s light years ahead of so many of his colleagues still mired in propagandistic Cold War logic — makes a clear-eyed, irreverent black comedy which manages to condemn both the military-industrial complex as well as its inherent, ridiculous red tape that renders it obtuse and impotent. Against this background, the director sharply and skillfully highlights the elephantine weight of human stupidity and folly, presenting a wide range of bizarre and ludicrous characters who, between ineptitude and fanaticism, represent the very hallmark of self-destruction.

Extraordinary performances all around, but Peter Sellers particularly stands out in an extraordinary three separate roles, earning a well-deserved Academy Award nomination for Best Actor (George C. Scott and Sterling Hayden are excellent as well).

Among the memorable dialogue scenes, one that comes to mind is the unhinged General Ripper attempting to indict the Soviets by bringing up the fact that “commies” only drink vodka, and never water, the source of all life.

Quotes

  • Well now, what happened is... uhm... one of our base commanders, he had a sort of... well, he went a little funny in the head... you know... just a little... funny. And, ah... he went and did a silly thing... Well, I'll tell you what he did. He ordered his planes... to attack your country...
  • Mr. President, I'm not saying we wouldn't get our hair mussed. But I do say no more than ten to twenty million killed, tops. Uh, depending on the breaks.
  • Have you ever seen a Commie drink a glass of water? [...] Vodka. That's what they drink, isn't it?
  • Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room.

Trivia

  • The Library of Congress included “Dr. Strangelove” in the first group of films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1989.
  • 1964 was also the year “Fail Safe” (directed by Sidney Lumet) came out, another savvy Cold War thriller that clearly has much in common with the earlier “Dr. Strangelove”.
