Frogs

Plot

Author: Alessandro Venditti
Adaptation: Kevan Houser

A small private island serves as the vacation playground for an “ugly rich” extended family led by patriarch Jason Crockett, a dyed-in-the-wool anti-environmentalist who thinks nothing of pouring all sorts of poisons and pesticides into the swamp just to put a stop to the annoying croaking of nearby amphibians.

The group idly pollutes the environment until one of the Crockett scions nearly hits a young freelance photojournalist with his speedboat following a reckless maneuver. The outsider, one Pickett Smith, is rescued from the water and invited to an upcoming party on the private island (the senior Crockett enjoys celebrating his birthday on the Fourth of July).

Smith, who’s been hanging around the area with an eye to putting together a magazine piece chronicling local pollution, soon butts heads with the senior Crockett over the latter’s criminal negligence of the environment. The young photographer goes so far as to predict that nature will exact its revenge against mankind. That threat turns real soon enough when the bay’s reptiles and amphibians begin manifesting highly aggressive behavior, laying siege to the millionaire’s villa.

Frogs attacking windows, snakes in chandeliers... those aren't exactly normal things.

In the bottomless pit of eco-horror movies that were all the rage during the late ’70s and early ’80s, “Frogs” represents one of least interesting examples of the genre.

Derivative beyond words, the film’s structure is so banal and didactic that it really says a lot about the producers’ efforts and motivations. Indeed, the cut-and-paste pro-environmental theme looks and sounds phony right off the bat. The overall effect is one of a slipshod, heavy-handed effort packed with insipid stereotypes (it resorts to showing familiar settings packed with toads and snakes, casting them as slimy, repulsive creatures meant to gross out the viewer). The whole thing was dead on arrival, in part due to a storyline that’s flat and dull to the point of being soporific, along with a catatonic cast in which the aged and rapidly declining Milland offers a dazed performance, a mere shadow of the once-great actor.

Drowning in a sea of phoned-in dialogue and throw-away lines (stuff like: “What if nature were trying to get back at us?“), a couple of totally insane scenes emerge, probably the product of a feverish brain (the attack of the killer underbrush, the greenhouse assault).

If there had been a lot more cheesy scenes like those, at least we could’ve filed this film under the category “campy trash” and sat back to enjoy the unintentional humor.

Quotes

  • You overdone it with those pesticides and poisons here. I'm afraid to think what's happened.
  • Frogs attacking windows, snakes in chandeliers... those aren't exactly normal things.
  • I still believe man is master of the world.

Trivia

  • Despite the title, there’s scarcely a frog to be seen in this film. Among the amphibians, toads rule the roost here (a large number of “Bufo marinus” specimens, in particular). As far as the reptiles, colubrids are mainly used to represent ophidians (mostly “Elaphe guttata”), with the exception of one poor rattlesnake in a defensive posture in every shot. Examples of “Tupinambis teguixin” and “Gekko gecko” (the Asian Tokay) serve as standard-bearers for the suborder Sauria, along with some Iguanidae belonging to the genus Anolis. On the Crocodilia front, the decision was made to use young caimans and one alligator. Finally, it’s possible to catch a fleeting glimpse of a robust snapping turtle.
  • Turning to the literary realm, the undisputed precursor to the “nature’s revenge” theme is Arthur Machen’s short novel “The Terror” (1915).
