Plot
When a bacteriologist engaged in government research is found dead under mysterious circumstances, the Pentagon sends a “State Department of Security” agent to get to the bottom of things at the Peckham, California facility where scientists seem to have plenty of time for promiscuous sexual escapades.
As the death tally rises exponentially over the next few days, the local police note some commonalities among the fatalities: “One, all the victims have been men. Two, all the men have been residents of Peckham. And third, they’ve all died apparently […] by over-exhaustion in the act of sexual intercourse“.
With the disappearance of lead sex researcher Dr. Henry Murger from the Department of “Reproductive Biology“, the investigation takes a surprising turn, focusing on one Dr. Susan Harris, a beautiful entomologist whose research involves bees. It seems she’s been tinkering with a sophisticated gadget that uses radiation to transform women into sex-crazed queen bees (in a manner of speaking, since the metamorphosis can only be seen in bee girls’ black compound eyes).
Why is she doing it? She doesn’t seem to know herself.

Critique
3It’s hard to believe that a team-up between a (two-time) Academy Award winner such as Denis Sanders and a capable jack-of-all-trades like Nicholas Meyer (he wrote the screenplay) could produce such a muddled mess. What was originally intended to be a provocative work steeped in feminist passions turns out to be a blah example of sci-fi/horror (s)exploitation with no particular rhyme or reason.
The film is plagued by dismal overall sloppiness, capped off with clear ineptitude when it comes to managing the pacing. The result is a feeble, repetitive story totally incapable of sparking any interest. The decision to rely so heavily on the erotic component might be understandable if it hadn’t all been reduced to a collection of bared breasts in a milieu packed with moronic actors.
There’s no lack of weird elements, and the one that aren’t recycled – insect POV shots had already been seen in classics such as “The Fly” (1958), for example – will be far more intelligently employed in sci-fi films later in the decade (the mutant girls’ totally black eyes are identical to those of the android women in “The Stepford Wives” from 1975, for example).
The dialogue certainly matches the film’s depressing style, regaling us with locker-room talk along the lines of: “We balled, and we balled, and we balled… till he dropped dead“. And: “There’d be a few seconds of ecstasy, and then, oblivion. Just think about it, boys: coming and going at the same time“. Or: “Me, for one, ain’t going to give up what little pleasure I get from screwing my old lady, or anybody else for that matter!“.
Warning: the film closes with the music of Strauss, à la Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”. It’s enough to take a good five years off the life of a true cinephile.

- Eight guys are dead from ballin', and you don't even know what's caused it! Now, I agree with Sam here that you guys over at Brandt's what's done it! One of your goddamn experiments backfired on you, probably.
- There are a lot of sex games that go on here. Wife swapping, and, uh, a lot of related nonsense. Scientists really aren't any different from the rest of humanity. Just a bit more inventive, is all.
- You know, Freud said, the idea of dying during or just after the sex act has an ambivalent appeal.
- Can you cross a man and a horse?
Trivia
- Hymenopterans and hot women: a combination that in Roger Corman’s hands took shape as the not awful “The Wasp Woman” (1959).
- Cameo for first-timer Colleen Brennan (aka Sharon Kelly), future hardcore porn star.
