Killers from Space

Plot

Author: Alessandro Venditti
Adaptation: Kevan Houser

Dr. Douglas Martin is gathering some super-top-secret atomic bomb data for the US Air Force when he mysteriously loses control of his aircraft and crashes. Despite dying in the crash, he shows up at the base the next day!

It turns out a swarm of aliens from “Astron Delta” is behind it all. Using their advanced medical science, they resuscitate the dead nuclear scientist and decide to use him as a pawn to advance their nefarious plot. Obviously, they plan to take over the Earth, although their strategy to achieve this end is a bit unique, to say the least. The basic (admittedly muddled) idea is to accumulate the energy released from our atomic tests and use it to somehow breed aggressive, humongous insects and reptiles that will devour all life on Earth. After that, the invaders plan to wipe out those mutant creatures with some sort of killer sonic rays and use their bodies as fertilizer (!) to usher in a new era of civilization – theirs!

When Dr. Martin refuses to participate in this crazy project, the aliens subject him to some kind of brainwashing, but with questionable efficacy… Back on base, Martin’s superiors suspect he might be a foreign agent, so they subject him to questioning under Sodium Pentothal. The “truth serum” drug causes him to regain his memory of the alien encounter, and he attempts to warn his colleagues of the looming menace, but, unsurprisingly, no one believes his wild story.

That’s when his intrinsic genius kicks in, sparking a eureka moment – all he needs to do is unplug the alien equipment! Why didn’t he think of that sooner?

Their eyes... those horrible eyes!

In 1954, while Billy Wilder was making “Sabrina” with Humphrey Bogart and Audrey Hepburn, his second-rate big brother was hard at work on “Killers from Space”, a mishmash of unfathomable sci-fi nonsense in which inane aliens propose one of the most improbable invasion plans in movie history.

The screenplay is based on a credo of absurdity. Among countless ridiculous plot points, it would be impossible to ignore Dr. Martin’s slipshod thievery – when he steals some top-secret information while under the aliens’ influence, he leaves behind a huge pile of his pipe tobacco in the walk-in safe, which he then forgets to close as he makes his getaway…

Everything about the movie looks shoddy and superficial, from the painful special effects – like the obviously superimposed eyes that torment the protagonist – to the aliens’ improbable makeup. In fact, the invaders’ appearance earns them a reserved spot at the front of the annals of sci-fi trash. They’re basically a bunch of weaselly goons in cheap bodysuits with what looks like wooly caterpillars for eyebrows and ping-pong balls for eyes, lending them a blank, glassy expression (which would even make the toon version of Judge Doom from “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” jealous), and a couple of clumsy fin-like hands reminiscent of the Penguin’s in Tim Burton’s “Batman Returns”.

Basically, another of W. Lee Wilder’s numerous films that manages to ooze incompetence and ineptitude from every single frame. If you must see it, have some lively friends around to alleviate the seventy minutes of agony.
