Plot
It’s the 17th century. In a little town on the English coast, Reverend Blyss is hiding a huge secret: he’s actually Captain Clegg, a notorious pirate who escaped the gallows and now leads a (more or less) irreproachable life under a false name.
Despite his new identity, he never gave up his bad habit of smuggling, and to keep potential curious eyes away from his illicit trade, he’s been encouraging rumors of a mysterious legion of ghosts eager to get their clutches on anyone venturing near the marsh that surrounds the town.
After a traitor spills the beans, a group of the king’s soldiers arrives at Blyss’s community under orders to stamp out any illegal activity.
Their faces were like nothing on this earth. Glowing as if on fire.
Critique
7Based on a successful saga by novelist Russell Thorndike, Hammer produces a deft example of a genre-bending film where dramatic elements and a hint of horror are sprinkled into what’s mainly a tale of adventure.
Good ensemble cast (Peter Cushing truly shines), snappy dialogue, and fast, action-packed scenes – the fist-fight between Reverend Blyss and the mulatto giant is unforgettable – make the film a rip-roaring good time even today.
The British production company will follow up on the pirate theme with “The Pirates of Blood River” (1962) and “The Devil-Ship Pirates” (1964), both featuring the legendary Christopher Lee.
