Night of the Eagle

Plot

Author: Alessandro Venditti
Adaptation: Kevan Houser

Skeptical college professor Norman Taylor is shocked to discover his wife Tansy has scattered bizarre charms and amulets throughout their home. His astonishment turns to utter dismay and disbelief when she claims that these esoteric practices and rituals offer protection by warding off evil spirits and spells.

Being a fervent believer in logic and science, Taylor urges his wife to get rid of all her supposed magic charms. The repercussions of that act don’t take long to manifest themselves in the poor professor’s life…

I do not believe!

Refined example of British horror, “Night of the Eagle” relies heavily on quaint, British manners and psychological depth as it rehashes the classic battle between science and magic (or rather between the reassuring aspects of reason and the terrifying power of the unknown). Val Lewton/Jacques Tourneur masterpieces from the 1940s seem to have had a marked influence on the way horror is depicted here – suggested rather than shown (along with a hint of Gothic elements). There are also numerous similarities with “Night of the Demon” (1957), undisputed pinnacle in the career of the aforementioned French director.

Overall, Hayers’ film constitutes a rather faithful adaptation (more in spirit than in actual plot, though) of one of Fritz Leiber’s finest novels (“Conjure Wife” from 1943), a definite must-have for fans of the witchcraft genre. As for the cast, Peter Wyngarde stands out with his excellent performance in the role of a sociology professor doomed to watch his beliefs in the rational world progressively crumble away.

The eagle in the title refers to a statue of a bird of prey (it was a dragon in the literary version), itself a symbol of occult powers.
