Plot
A serious accident leaves Dr. Anton Phibes, an organist with a degree in theology, deeply scarred, both physically and mentally. Driven mad by his obsession to avenge the death of his sick, beloved wife, he draws up a list of those he holds responsible (doctors and nurses who tried in vain to save her in the operating room) and makes plans to eliminate them using elaborate killing devices.
The bewildered police investigate.

Critique
6The eccentric Robert Fuest directs an interesting horror film whose success is the product of a bizarre mélange of Art Deco sets, powerful, refined musical themes (the film opens with the protagonist intently playing Mendelssohn’s “War March of the Priests”, and the unforgettable Vincent Price, whose Wagnerian performance stops just short of excess. His Dr. Phibes is a soul tortured with unspeakable suffering, whose earthly existence is devoted to vengeance.
The repetitive storyline is redeemed by the creative portrayal of the murders (from which the “Saw” saga seems to have drawn a lot of inspiration), which rather imaginatively recreate the biblical 10 plagues of Egypt.
Flashes of British humor pop up here and there, particularly as the police conduct their investigations.
