Plot
Fearing that a deadly family prophecy will come to pass, evil Baron Gregor de Berghman, motivated by despicable intentions, pleads for his globe-trotting twin, Anton, to return to the castle.
His sinister machinations quickly take an entirely unexpected turn…

7Atmospheric costume drama with horror overtones produced by Columbia Pictures, “The Black Room” represents a minor classic of the 1930s whose dynamic narrative style and art direction has the merit of predating the Gothic film wave of the late 1950s.
As for the cast, everything revolves around a theatrical Boris Karloff who seems to revel in playing two diametrically opposite characters. Director Roy W. Neill (“Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman”, 1943) bets big on mood and atmosphere, ably taking full advantage of an elegant B/W cinematography which packs significant visual impact.
The screenplay by Henry Myers and Arthur Strawn was inspired by a popular Hungarian legend. The final result is a truly delightful essay film.
