Plot
Following an iridescent meteor shower, a significant portion of humanity (that is, everyone who witnessed the strange heavenly show) wakes up with permanently damaged optic nerves. One of the few to retain his vision is navy officer Bill Masen, who suddenly finds himself thrown into a London populated by blind people suffering from a wide range of delusions.
The man, along with an orphaned girl he happens to run into, undertakes a long journey in a desperate attempt to find a remedy to the situation. Further complicating matters is the proliferation of “Triffidus coelestus”, a type of ambulatory plant which (unlike in the original novel) arrived from outer space and has no compunction about feeding on human flesh.
Fortunately, a biologist couple will discover a solution to defeat this formidable alien menace.

Critique
4.5Minor 1960s sci-fi classic, “The Day of the Triffids” isn’t a terribly engaging film and basically fails to translate the evocative power and remarkable appeal of the novel it was based on (one of the finest literary works by British writer John Wyndham) to the big screen.
The pacing is half-hearted, and the characters, although reasonably well developed, struggle to come together in a cohesive whole (in fact, the lighthouse scenes were shot at a later stage by Freddie Francis in order to pad the running time). Meanwhile, the special effects look so simplistic that during the fight between the biologist and the gangly plant-alien, it looks like we’re watching Guybrush Threepwood training in Captain Smirk’s home.
Fans of avant-garde sci-fi will nevertheless find aspects that pique their interest.
