Plot
Dr. Feinstone, respected and successful dentist, discovers his wife cheating on him with the comely pool maintenance man, a revelation that pushes the clean freak (“Nothing, no matter how good or how pure… is free of decay“) over the edge into insanity.
Convinced he’s acting as an “instrument of perfection and hygiene“, the dentist soon begins using the tools of his trade to cleanse society of the decay that infests it. Among the first to undergo his drastic treatment: a greedy social climber, an airheaded model, and an IRS bloodsucker.
We had a perfect life together, but underneath that clean, white surface, there was the stench of decay.
Critique
5Start cleaning! Once again Brian Yuzna unleashes on a superficial “society” which looks clean and polished on the outside, but a putrid decay lurks just below the surface.
A glaring example of anti-capitalist and anti-middle-class satire, “The Dentist” is limited by its excessive reliance on a single theme (the parallel between dental hygiene and societal health), which quickly leads to a certain narrative repetitiveness, capped off by a pat ending.
Cast: Corbin Bernsen is convincing in the role of the obsessive doctor who finds the ugliness of an inherently corrupt and purulent society repugnant. The supporting cast includes Earl Boen – the psychiatrist from the “Terminator” saga -, as well as the always appreciated Ken Foree (“Dawn of the Dead” (1978), “From Beyond” (1986), “The Lords of Salem” 2012).
Reasonably well-done special effects: cut-off tongues, brutally extracted teeth, gruesome drilling…
