The Horrible Dr. Hichcock

Plot

Author: Alessandro Venditti
Adaptation: Kevan Houser

In 1885 London, the renowned Dr. Bernard Hichcock satisfies his necrophiliac urges by injecting massive doses of anesthetics into his consenting wife. This little game goes tragically awry when the doctor decides to administer an experimental drug which turns out to have a lethal effect on his spouse.

Devastated by the event, Hichcock abandons his ancestral mansion for an extended period. After spending 12 years abroad, he is finally ready to return to his former home. Completely reinvigorated and recently remarried to the lovely Cynthia, he is more determined than ever to resume his career.

Unfortunately, the familiar domestic environment, along with a series of extraordinary circumstances, will reawaken his forbidden desires, leading to a rapid exacerbation of his old symptoms. Poor Cynthia will obviously be the one who pays the price…

Forgive me, but this house has such a strange effect on me. It's so hostile.

Critique

6.5
Author: Alessandro Venditti

Cemeteries, black cats, premature burials, female spirits in the night – although the classic Gothic repertoire is fully exploited by Riccardo Freda (credited as “Robert Hampton”), “The Horrible Dr. Hichcock” transcends those genre boundaries to become a work intrinsically steeped in psychoanalytic reverberations (Dr. Lowe claims to have taken notes from Freud in person).

In fact, emphasizing the unbreakable nature of the mind-body connection and making sexual impulses the driving force behind the events, the film immediately rejects metaphysical questions (“So much time has been wasted in attempts to analyze the soul, while the mechanical, material side of our beings remains an unknown universe“) to focus on the psychopathological deviations of an individual who is incapable of controlling a form of paraphilia so intense that it leads to a progressive impairment of his daily functioning.

In order to avoid censorship – given the film’s extremely delicate subject matter – the director opts to suggest rather than show, through a skillful use of cuts and omissions. The result is a definitely original product characterized by a decent level of suspense and acted with fine gusto by a capable cast (the always exceptional Barbara Steele takes on an atypical role as a victim).

Noteworthy cinematography by Raffaele Masciocchi (credited as “Donald Green”). Equally noteworthy is the sumptuous art direction by Franco Fumagalli. The screenplay certainly doesn’t excel – it’s a bit thin and drags at times – but with such a stylish film, those considerations fall by the wayside.

Quotes

  • Forgive me, but this house has such a strange effect on me. It's so hostile. I'm scared by all kinds of things... even the cat.
  • Death... will take you as you sleep.

Trivia

  • Alfred Hitchcock and “his” celebrity composer Bernard Herrmann inspired the protagonist’s name as Freda pays homage to the esteemed British director, even referencing several of his masterpieces (“Rebecca”, 1940; “Suspicion”, 1941).
  • In some respects, the plot of “The Horrible Dr. Hichcock” is reminiscent of that of the wonderful “Jane Eyre” (1847) by Charlotte Brontë.
