Plot
Dr. Amanda Hollins spent her entire career experimenting with genetic manipulation, hoping to expand scientific knowledge for the benefit of the human race. But on her deathbed, realizing the dangerous ramifications of her unfinished work, the woman implores her son John (also a geneticist) to destroy all of her research notes and burn every trace of the “Anthony journals”. As the staff ushers the confused young man from his fading mother’s hospital room, she blurts out one final stunning revelation: Anthony is his brother – one he never knew existed!
Realizing how much he’s been in the dark about the exact nature of his mother’s work, John decides to investigate, and so he heads to her secluded old house with a small coterie of doctors, friends, and a lovely young woman he just happened to meet at his mother’s funeral, and who claims to be a huge admirer of the deceased scientist. Lying in wait is that mysterious brother, but it’s hardly a warm family reunion, given that “Anthony” turns out to be a tentacled monster with a predilection for killing.
Complicating matters, one of Amanda’s former colleagues – corrupt mad scientist Phillip Lloyd – will stop at nothing to get his hands on the creature, and he wants it alive!
You're part of it, John. It's part of your heart, part of your mind, part of your soul...
Critique
6The last hurrah for the Carpenter/Obrow team is this sci-fi bio-horror film that employs a classic setup to focus on the aberrant consequences of science gone mad. The directors – who also wrote the screenplay – particularly enjoy toying with the theme of genetics, long synonymous with unspeakable mutants displaying a ravenous bent. Even though the plot doesn’t really break any new ground and is filled with plenty of confusing stretches, the film does manage to keep the tension building right up to the end, delivering a healthy dose of genuine anxiety to boot.
As for the performances, it would be impossible not to mention the glowering mad doctor played by Rod Steiger, a gifted actor long accustomed to lending his face to sinister, unpleasant characters. The real gem here, though, is the surprising special effects (proudly practical) and the excellent makeup of Matthew W. Mungle, who seems to have been inspired by the Lovecraftian universe when he came up with a slimy bestiary composed of amphibious and tentacled humanoids – on that subject, it’s impossible to overlook poor Melissa’s extraordinary transmutation.
Unfairly overlooked, this film is highly recommended for sci-fi horror fans.
