The Manchurian Candidate

Plot

Author: Alessandro Venditti
Adaptation: Kevan Houser

During the Korean War (1950-53), a US Army platoon is captured by a Soviet airborne squad and held for three days in Manchuria (in communist China) at the “Pavlov Institute” – the name alone sheds light on the diabolical plan afoot. The captured American soldiers are subjected to an intense brainwashing technique that penetrates deep into the most hidden nooks of crannies of their subconscious in an unprecedented way.

Specifically, it’s Sergeant Raymond Shaw who’s the linchpin of this bold, international Communist conspiracy, and he’s transformed into an unwitting sleeper agent who, when triggered by the queen of diamonds playing card, becomes a blindly obedient assassin, killing selected targets along with any witnesses, all with no memory of his actions.

Why don't you pass the time by playing a little solitaire?

Timeless masterpiece and undisputed pinnacle of the political thriller genre, “The Manchurian Candidate” is based on Richard Condon’s exceptional 1959 novel of the same name, and was the first chapter of director John Frankenheimer’s “Paranoia Trilogy”.

After a highly conceptual first reel, strewn with psychoanalytic themes and Pavlovian echoes, the film takes the shape of a dark thriller laden with mystery and angst. Exemplary from a technical point of view (splendid B/W cinematography by Lionel Lindon), the film also excels on the content front: the director doesn’t hold back on his sarcastic, caustic barbs directed at the political sphere, particularly America’s widespread Cold War obsession following World War II.

Amid a truly first-class cast, Angela Lansbury’s superb performance stands out. As the diabolical Mrs. Iselin, she’s rightfully earned her spot on the American Film Institute’s top 50 screen villains of all time. No less impressive is the bald Dr. Yen Lo, played by Khigh Dhiegh, a nefarious shrink with an innocent appearance and a ready quip: “Profit? Fiscal year? Beware, my dear Zilkov. The virus of capitalism is highly infectious. Soon, you’ll be lending money out at interest!“; “Do you realize, comrade, the implications of the weapon that has been placed at your disposal? […] A normally conditioned American who has been trained to kill, and then to have no memory of having killed. […] Having been relieved of those uniquely American symptoms, guilt and fear, he cannot possibly give himself away“.

The karate-infused clash between Frank Sinatra and the legendary Henry Silva is hard to forget, as is the incredible scene at the assembly of Communist military brass where the brainwashed victims are convinced they’re at a humdrum meeting of the ladies’ garden club.

The disappointing 2004 remake is one of the great director Jonathan Demme’s few false steps.

Quotes

  • I am sure you've all heard the old wives' tale that no hypnotized subject may be forced to do that which is repellent to his moral nature, whatever that may be... nonsense, of course!
  • One last step, and then when I take power, they will be pulled down and ground into dirt for what they did to you, and what they did in so contemptuously underestimating me!
  • Raymond Shaw is the kindest, bravest, warmest, most wonderful human being I've ever known in my life.
  • His brain has not only been washed, as they say... It has been dry-cleaned.
  • Why don't you pass the time by playing a little solitaire?

Trivia

  • Under the tight constraints of the Hays Code, screenwriter George Axelrod – with the collaboration of Frankenheimer himself – made substantial cuts to some of the more unpleasant and titillating aspects of the novel, but the film still retains a hard, uncomfortable edge.
  • Despite being a mere 3 years older than Laurence Harvey, Angela Lansbury was cast as his mother. Lucille Ball, 14 years older than Lansbury, was the actress that Frank Sinatra originally wanted for the crucial role, according to director John Frankenheimer in a published interview.
  • The other films in the “Paranoia Trilogy” are “Seven Days in May” (1964) and “Seconds” (1966).
