Plot
Some crates destined for the Chicago Natural History Museum contain something very unusual. Leaves of an Amazonian plant used for packing appear to be contaminated with an unknown fungus. Scientific curiosity leads evolutionary biologist Margo Green to run a series of tests on the strange red substance, discovering the presence of concentrated doses of the same hormones secreted by the human hypothalamus.
This scientific oddity takes on disturbing tones when the dead body of a museum security guard is found, and the autopsy reveals that certain subcortical structures, including his hypothalamus, are missing from his severed head. The police spring into action, locking down the museum (with VIPs in attendance, no less), but they’re ill-prepared to face the predatory chimera that’s on the prowl…
Sometimes there are sudden evolutionary changes that create a grotesque and short-lived aberrant species...
Critique
6.5Drawing on best-selling novels by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (“Relic” and “Reliquary” from 1995 and 1997, respectively), veteran director Peter Hyams crafts an engrossing sci-fi bio-horror film built on a shrewd screenplay that manages to smartly combine two themes that at first blush might seem diametrically opposed: myth and science (here, the former is represented by legends and tribal practices of the indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest, while the latter encompasses endocrinology, evolution, and microbiology).
Beyond being a prime example of conceptually interesting sci-fi, “Relic” also possesses undeniable value as pure entertainment. After the first reel, rich with mystery in the vein of a detective story, the film takes on all the earmarks of a claustrophobic thriller, to the point that some have floated a comparison with Ridley Scott’s 1979 “Alien” (which is all well and good, but let’s not get carried away…).
A pair of energetic protagonists: Tom Sizemore is convincing in the role of the conscientious and obsessively superstitious police lieutenant. Not to be outdone is the lovely Penelope Ann Miller as a biologist with a fiery personality. The mutant creature maintains a sinister appeal while hidden in the shadows, but once out in the open, it inexorably loses its effectiveness. Overall, the second-rate practical effects are still preferable to the computer graphics that were still in their early stages at the time.

Quotes
- Well, you must excuse Margo, Lieutenant. She believes that science must destroy myth, and as a consequence, she has very little patience with superstitious people like us.
- South American tribe, the Zenzera, long thought to be extinct. They made a deal with Satan to vanquish their enemies. So Kothoga was born, son of Satan.
- Dr. Frock argues that sometimes there are sudden evolutionary changes that create a grotesque and short-lived aberrant species...
- Seven decapitations in one week. Don't you just hate someone who only takes head and never gives it?
Trivia
- Among the film’s various examples of (pseudo)scientific blather, there’s Dr. Frock’s eccentric theory he calls the “Callisto Effect”, which states that evolution periodically creates an “ultimate predator”, that is, a “monster species” so powerful and well-adapted that it triggers a mass extinction event before dying out itself.
