Plot
College anthropology professor Albert Wilmarth specializes in folklore, but is a hardcore skeptic when it comes to anything paranormal, refusing to entertain the possibility that certain myths and legends might be built on a foundation of truth.
He carries on a correspondence with a retired Vermont folklorist, Henry Akeley, who is convinced that sentient creatures are prowling about in the woods surrounding his remote property, and that their intentions may be hostile. They turn out to be the Mi-Go, repulsive crustacean-like aliens bent on invading the Earth by opening an inter-dimensional gateway.
Wilmarth, driven by acute curiosity, accepts an invitation to visit the rural location and undertake a rational investigation to determine the truth of the matter (“Science doesn’t strive to explain things away. Science is a method of arriving at the truth!“).
He’s in for an unpleasant surprise…

5.5After writing and producing the short feature film “The Call of Cthulhu” (2005), Sean Branney makes his directorial debut with a new adaptation of an H.P. Lovecraft short story – 1930’s extraordinary “The Whisperer in Darkness”.
The result is an elegant picture (superb B/W) whose main strength is its ability to imbue long stretches of the film with the same texture and mood generally evoked by the original literary works of the lonely writer from Providence. What emerges, then, is a dismal atmosphere of uncertainty, that sense of impending catastrophe that clings to a humanity surrounded by horrors eager to burst into our reality and infect it with unmentionable abominations.
Unfortunately, the film offers a decidedly weak ending in which Branney’s own screenplay takes several liberties of dubious merit. Additionally, the decision to reveal something that was better left to the imagination runs headlong into the reality of weak digital effects, not to mention the very concept of “cosmic horror”, which is based on a cornerstone of mysterious phenomenon beyond our comprehension.
