Plot
To monitor a disturbing geologic fault that threatens telluric upheavals on a global scale, a group of deep-diving scientists launch a complex mission onboard the nuclear-powered submarine “Hydronaut”. The hastily assembled research team must strategically position 50 advanced sonar-equipped sensors which would allow scientists to pick up potential warning signs of impending seismic activity, potentially saving tens of millions of lives.
The mission encounters a considerable number of unforeseen complications that will put our heroes to the test.

Critique
5.5A year after “Crack in the World” (1965), Andrew Marton reprises his pet theme of seismic menace with this story in the adventure mold that’s something of a throwback to literary classics of the late 19th century. There’s no lack of innocence and everything has an anachronistic feel (even for mid-1960s sci-fi), but the pacing is still decent and there are even a few endearing touches, such as the ongoing chess games between Stahl and Volker.
Fair-to-middling performances by a cast grappling with a host of characters that can be described as stereotypical to say the least. Even Dr. Margaret Hanford, the physician/marine biologist, originally intended to symbolize female emancipation in the contemporary western world, shows up for the mission wearing a tight dress and highly impractical shoes, and despite her two doctorates, makes and serves a lot of coffee and food (“Margaret Hanford is as handy with a skillet as a scalpel“). Evidently, the screenwriters were firmly anchored in the Jules Verne era on this topic as well.
