Plot
Members of a drug cartel are being wiped out by a homicidal commando in South America. When the carnage comes to Miami, intrepid local TV reporter Fran Hudson smells a scoop. A photo retrieved at the scene of a massacre leads her to investigate the matter. She discovers the bloody crime is somehow linked to the reappearance of a supposedly dead Colonel Brian Horne, former right-hand man to Jim Jones, lunatic founder of the notorious “Peoples Temple” cult.
The ex-military man has in fact adopted a new, but equally insane mission. Having installed himself as the leader of a tribe of Indios, he’s begun launching a series of bloody raids along the banks of the Rio Negro with the goal of gaining control of the world’s cocaine market in order to “destroy the weak and […] to free humanity of its self-indulgence, purify it once and for all“.
Fran and her cameraman get the bright idea to contact the fanatic, hoping to arrange a live and in-person interview with him in the Amazon. When the two reckless reporters’ plane lands at a sadistic Russian trafficker’s base camp in the Venezuelan jungle, they come face-to-face with a blood-curdling demonstration of Horne’s horrific tactics…
A number of the victims have been horribly mutilated.
Critique
6Adventure trumps horror as director Ruggero Deodato wraps up his “cannibal” trilogy. Despite no lack of severed heads and dismemberments of every kind (the makeup is extremely well-done as always), “Cut and Run” leans heavily on action and adventure and pulls it off with an engaging story and a great feel for pacing. The Italian director once again demonstrates he’s right at home filming in the middle of a savage wilderness. His technical skill and his ability to keep the action coming at a steady pace, combined with his marked taste for the macabre and sensationalism enable him to deliver a top-tier film steeped in old-school cynicism.
Definitely not for everyone, especially given that the thought of dredging up memories of the real-life atrocities committed by the “Reverend” Jim Jones (the man behind the notorious 1978 Jonestown massacre) might make more than a few turn their noses up. At least this time we’re spared scenes of gratuitous violence against animals, which is certainly no small achievement given how much we saw of that in the prior two films.
Pretty decent performances from the actors, among whom we would single out a gutsy Lisa Blount in the role of a crusading journalist (just don’t dare show her a snake!), a Valentina Forte who’s as beautiful as she is cynical, and an über-villainous Michael “Pluto” Berryman.
Fun fact: there’s not even a hint of a cannibal in the whole movie!
