Plot
Baron von Frankenstein dreams of repopulating the planet with “a new race, entirely created by me, responding only to my bidding“. The mad doctor plans to launch this superior race with the progeny of the two “perfect” creatures – one male, one female – he’s assembling in his lab from the very best anatomical parts obtained from various corpses.
But in an unfortunate mix-up, the baron uses the head of an asexual aspiring monk for his male specimen, making that coveted offspring more difficult to achieve than he had anticipated…

Critique
6.5One can only imagine what Mary Shelley would have thought about Andy Warhol’s take on the mythos born of her 1818 Gothic novel. “Flesh for Frankenstein” puts a unique spin on her creation, weaving a wild and crazy story heavy on the exploitation. The effective – albeit spartan – staging, the direction rich with creative flair characterized by a marked propensity for the macabre, and a top-notch cast lend quality to a film that otherwise might have degenerated into a forgettable piece of cinematic trash.
Campy, over-the-top performances propel what is for all intents and purposes a sci-fi horror satire drenched with Grand Guignol gore and suffused with a spot-on blend of eros and insanity. Special mention deservedly goes to Tonino Guerra (although it’s said that improvisation played a key role) for his dialogue which bubbles along with lines like: “To know death, Otto, you have to f*** life… in ze gallbladder!“.
Makeup by Antonio Margheriti, who was also credited as director in some Italian prints.

- Filmed back-to-back with “Blood for Dracula” (1974) at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, “Flesh for Frankenstein” was produced by Andy Warhol’s Factory (directed by Warhol acolyte Paul Morrissey – Warhol himself was minimally involved) in collaboration with producer Carlo Ponti, who earmarked a total budget of around $700,000.
