Plot
It’s 2031. Dr. Buchanan is hard at work developing the ultimate military project, “a weapon beyond your wildest imagination [that] can give your armed forces the power of a black hole“. In short, something so revolutionary that it will make war itself obsolete. Unfortunately, this technology is not without its side effects, one being so-called “time slips.” The good doctor soon finds himself caught in one of these bizarre temporal rifts and is catapulted back to a Swiss village in the year 1817.
Wandering confused in his new environment, the man encounters a bizarre scientist…
So here I am, either at the end of a world... or the beginning of one.
Critique
4After a twenty-year absence, Roger Corman returns to the director’s chair to make a sort of meta-literary sci-fi horror in which the vicissitudes of a scientific genius from the future intertwine with those of historic personalities and fictional characters of the early 19th century.
The film was inspired by the novel “Frankenstein Unbound” (1973) by noted sci-fi writer Brian W. Aldiss, but the end product is rather disappointing, and the discussion of the role of science in human history raises far more questions than it answers. The story is pervaded by a dull, made-for-TV atmosphere and offers a forgettable cast of characters that could be described as two-dimensional, to say the least.
Filmed in and around Milan using an Italian crew, the film avails itself of practical special effects of mediocre quality.
It barely registered at the box office.
