Plot
A busload of high school basketball players (complete with cheerleaders and coaches) is heading home after a championship victory. Driving along a rural stretch of the infamous “Highway 9”, they’re blissfully unaware that a predatory demon has his sights set on turning them into hors d’oeuvres. When two flat tires leave the disabled school bus stranded in the middle of nowhere, it’s no accident – it’s the opening salvo in a deadly game of cat and mouse perpetrated by the vicious Creeper, a batlike humanoid who loves the smell of fear.
As night falls, the terrified athletes are forced to band together against the winged nightmare, even though their situation seems hopeless. Coming to the teens’ aid is a local farmer who was forced to helplessly watch as his towheaded youngest son, screaming in terror, was whisked away by the flying monster.
Now armed with a homemade pneumatic harpoon gun, the vengeance-obsessed father is itching for a crack at the horrific demon…

Critique
6The commercial success of “Jeepers Creepers” (2001) was enough to convince Victor Salva to make a sequel. What he comes up with is definitely interesting. Setting aside the road movie format of the prior chapter, Salva’s direction relies instead on a classic centripetal structure that focuses on the bus as a final refuge, turning the siege against it into the dominant plot element.
The special effects are especially persuasive, validating the decision to reveal the creature’s appearance right from the start. Additionally, the high suspense level (with excellent nocturnal settings) and the dizzying pace of numerous scenes make for a reasonably engaging story. The opening sequence in a sun-drenched cornfield is extraordinary.
Cult-favorite scene: The monster rips his own bashed-in head off, replacing it with the head he’s just sliced off one of the boys in the bus.
It’ll be a good 14 years before the next sequel drops: “Jeepers Creepers 3” (2017).
