The elusive planet Krull is invaded by an abominable creature leading an army of “Slayers” eager to subjugate the entire galaxy. After having attacked and slaughtered members of Krull’s royal family, the monster is inspired to kidnap Princess Lyssa and lock her in the Black Fortress, a kind of shadowy castle with the weird property of teleporting to a different location every day.

Having survived the attack of the Slayers, Prince Colwyn decides to embark on a dangerous voyage to save his beloved Lyssa. A large group of mercenaries comes along to help him carry out his mission. They are joined by a dazed wizard, a spirited kid, and a depressed cyclops, not to mention a blind clairvoyant (whose powers of divination are indispensable for predicting the random movements of the Black Fortress).

After a promising introduction set in outer space, Peter Yates pares the sci-fi component to the bone, throwing body and soul into a totally undisciplined fantasy romp. The result is an ill-conceived film that ages poorly, with all the typical fantasy-genre settings turning up right on schedule, doing the heavy lifting for a plot that completely fails to captivate.

Additionally, the bloated, overly long film is totally lacking in characters worthy of interest, making the whole thing all the more difficult to digest. The only saving graces are the rich art direction and some adequate special effects (the stop-motion arachnid is cool) – after all, we’re talking about a not-inconsiderable production budget for the time.

Lukewarm reception and inevitable box-office flop. Mainly recommended for hard-core fantasy fans.
