Plot
Paris, 1845. Disguised as a carnival sideshow barker, Dr. Mirakle is really a passionate man of science who will go to any length to prove his hunches.
Specifically, he’s an early proponent of Darwinism, and in the face of general skepticism and hilarity, he resolutely asserts than man is descended from monkeys and that “life is mutation”. He subsequently decides that the only method of proving his assertions is to locate a human subject (preferably female) with a blood type compatible with that of a male gorilla taken from the heart of Africa…
To that end, the mad scientist begins kidnapping beautiful women and subjecting them to insane blood transfusions with devastating results. A young medical student will attempt to unmask him.

Critique
7Solid horror film produced by Universal Pictures, loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “Murder in the Rue Morgue” (1841).
The art direction is reminiscent of German Expressionism and the plot shares several commonalities with the seminal “Das Kabinett des Dr. Caligari” (1920). Robert Florey’s direction is competent but lacking creative flair, basically relying on Bela Lugosi’s intense theatrical performance. The actor has fun portraying his character in a rather colorful way, as a fanatic evolutionist whose plan to prove his personal theories ends up revealing rather disquieting morbid aspects of his personality.
Karl W. Freund’s elegant B/W cinematography is a guarantee of quality, as always. In certain respects, the ending anticipates that of the upcoming “King Kong” (1933).
