Plot
Paul Johnson – sunglasses, impeccable black suit, and briefcase in hand – is actually an alien from a dying planet covertly sent to Earth to seek out a cure for the horrible blood disease threatening to wipe out his race.
His mission is divided into six phases:
- carry out a preliminary study of human beings;
- send copious quantities of human blood back to his home planet;
- send a living human subject back for experimentation;
- determine the curative potential of said human blood;
- subjugate all Earthlings;
- destroy the Earth (God knows why…).
Given that money doesn’t seem to be an issue, Johnson sets up shop in a nice little mansion with a pool and hires a butler along with a nurse experienced in transfusions.
Anyone who tries to interfere with his nefarious plans ends up brutally liquidated by his deadly gaze.

Critique
5.5The dauntless Corman, indifferent to the fundamental absurdity afflicting the film in question, navigates the best he can through naïveté and implausibility, focusing mainly on the mystery aspect of the plot, emphasizing horror to the detriment of classic sci-fi elements.
The result is still respectable: using quick, precise strokes, the director deftly paints a handful of characters who aren’t entirely devoid of interest. Among them, the extraterrestrial visitor effectively portrayed by Paul Birch stands out (there’s definitely an element of social commentary inherent in the fact that he’s made up to look not like an alien, but like a member of the upper middle class who just so happens to want to suck his neighbor’s blood).
Of note, there are two identically titled remakes, both produced by Corman: “Not of This Earth” (1988 and 1995).
