Soylent Green

Plot

Author: Alessandro Venditti
Adaptation: Kevan Houser

New York, 2022. In a not-too-distant future in which overpopulation and ecological collapse have consigned a large swath of humanity to poverty, Soylent Industries, a multinational corporation controlling half the world’s food supply, introduces a new product with astounding nutritional properties. This revolutionary substance is known as Soylent Green “…the miracle food of high-energy plankton gathered from the oceans of the world“.

When a wealthy, influential Soylent Industries board member is assassinated in his own apartment, the case is turned over to gruff Detective Frank Thorn, who wastes no time determining that the crime is linked to highly delicate political intrigue and industrial secrets.

Despite his superiors’ desire to sweep the whole case – and the growing threats against them – under the rug as quickly as possible, Thorn pours his heart and soul into uncovering the truth. All that diligence will be amply rewarded…

Soylent Green is people!

Noteworthy adaptation of Harry Harrison’s novel “Make Room! Make Room!” (1966), the veteran Fleischer’s film can justifiably be considered one of the most successful and interesting examples of environmental warning films in the history of genre movies. Esthetically, the film doesn’t deviate far from 1970’s crime thrillers, but its dystopic nature combined with an ongoing diatribe against an egotistical, imbecilic human race constitutes its true beating heart (“People were always rotten. But the world was beautiful“).

On one hand, hunger dominates, smog renders the air unbreathable, and throngs of derelicts, packed liked sardines, block doorways and staircases of run-down buildings. On the other hand, a few typical fat cats, completely indifferent to the planet’s tragic condition (the sole wooded preserve in New York is contained inside a lousy greenhouse!), live like nabobs in their fortified skyscrapers furnished with every possible convenience.

Imbued with memorable scenes – rioting masses brutally scooped up by trucks outfitted with huge shovels, the moving euthanasia scene set to Beethoven’s “Pastoral Symphony” – “Soylent Green” boasts an utterly top-notch cast: Joseph Cotten, although filling only a minor role, breathes life into an extremely significant character; Charlton Heston, five years after the magnificent “Planet of Apes” (1968), confirms that science fiction is definitely in his wheelhouse with a performance replete with verve; finally, Edward G. Robinson is unforgettable in the role of Detective Thorn’s elderly research assistant (called a “book”), embodying the dying echo of a world that no longer exists outside the disillusioned old man’s distant childhood memories.

Quotes

  • You know, when I was a kid, food was food. Before our scientific magicians poisoned the water, polluted the soil, decimated plant and animal life.
  • Soylent Green is people!

Trivia

  • Although concerns regarding future global overpopulation had been voiced since the 1950s (1955’s “Tarantula!” by Jack Arnold, for example), they reached an unprecedented scope and depth in the ’60s and ’70s, not just among the international scientific community, but in popular culture as well, including art and literature. These concerns were in part the result of the disturbing results ethologist John Calhoun – inspired by the work of Thomas Robert Malthus – documented in his numerous experiments with rodents (the experiment known as “Universe 25” is undoubtedly the best known of the series). The term “behavioral sink”, coined by Calhoun himself, explicitly refers to the dysfunctional behaviors the rats demonstrated as a result of overpopulation, behaviors which precipitated an inevitable collapse in the experimental rodent society. From there, it’s tempting to extrapolate similar results for human society. In fact, according to Calhoun, the level of civilization and technological sophistication that mankind has achieved is irrelevant: Once the number of individuals capable of filling a given social role exceeds the number of such roles available, we reach “the death of societal organization”.
  • Another novel which addresses the subject of overpopulation (right from its title) is John Brunner’s “Stand on Zanzibar” (1968), a true innovative cornerstone of dystopian science fiction.
  • Edward G. Robinson’s final appearance. The film noir icon unexpectedly passed away shortly after shooting had been wrapped up.
