Plot
The valiant Sinbad the Sailor and his ship’s crew make a pit stop for supplies on the Isle of Colossa, where they witness a fearsome horned Cyclops attacking Sokurah the magician. Repelling the monster’s attack and saving the magician, the ship hurriedly resumes its voyage to Baghdad. Sokurah, now aboard Sinbad’s ship, is obsessed with regaining possession of an invaluable magic lamp stolen by the Cyclops in the hectic moments of his getaway.
Upon arriving at Baghdad, Sinbad and the local Caliph initially refuse to help Sokurah return to Colossa, but the treacherous magician is determined to recover the lamp by any means necessary, including deceit and blackmail, so one night he casts a nefarious spell on Princess Parisa, Sinbad’s betrothed, who awakens to find herself reduced to the size of a sparrow.
When Sinbad and the Caliph confront Sokurah, he says could concoct a potion to cure Parisa, but only if he can get his hands on some specific ingredients, one of which just happens to be found only on Colossa…

Critique
7Marvelous late-1950s fantasy film directed with a touch of panache by the experienced Nathan Juran. Bolstered by Ken Kolb’s ingenious screenplay that skillfully blends Middle Eastern fairy tales with Greek mythology, the work is characterized by an edge-of-the-seat pacing and an extremely evocative figurative framework.
The passing of the decades hasn’t tarnished the visual and narrative punch of a film that still manages to impart a sense of exoticism and adventure that’s difficult to equal today (it’s certainly no accident that the film was added to the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry in 2008). Credit also goes to the irresistible bestiary brought to life by visual effects wizard Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion animation, filmed in color here for the first time: a Cyclops with satyr’s legs, a two-headed bird (the frightful Roc of Arab folklore, a gigantic bird of prey capable of snatching up an adult elephant), a fire-breathing dragon, a sinuous blue cobra-woman.
Among numerous classic scenes, it would impossible not to mention the incredibly popular swordfight between Sinbad and the skeleton.
