The Andromeda Strain

Based on Michael Crichton’s novel of the same name (1969), the unparalleled Robert Wise delivers one of the most well-made and interesting examples of grown-up sci-fi in the history of the Seventh Art. His approach to the material is extremely focused: through the use of a cold, clinical, semi-documentary tone and a series of sets with noteworthy visual impact (building the underground lab cost nearly $300,000 at the time), we witness the delicate work of confronting and managing a potentially apocalyptic biological crisis as it unfolds, from identifying the pathogen, to the complex task of analyzing its properties, to devising strategies to control and contain it.

Beyond remaining faithful to the literary source in many respects, the film manages to effectively convey the Chicago novelist’s characteristic anxieties and concerns, especially those inherent in the irresponsible use of scientific knowledge. Along those lines, there’s a deep-seated fear that research can be exploited for political purposes and directed towards a pursuit of power (recall that “Scoop” turns out to be a government project designed to identify potential biological weapons).

Overall, “The Andromeda Strain” is a work that vividly depicts the creeping sense of insecurity assailing contemporary western society. Besides, when you’re facing a deadly enemy you can’t see or hear, all expectations of safety and stability inexorably fall by the wayside.
