Infection

Author: Serena Debegnach
The word "infection" describes the condition caused when pathogenic agents such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, etc. invade the body, provoking the onset of illness. The transmission of an infectious disease leads us to the concept of "contagion", a process which can occur either via direct contact with a carrier (who may or may not manifest symptoms of the disease), or through contact with contaminated materials or other vectors, such as spiders or insects.

This Tag seeks to assemble a collection of films which assign an important role to the themes of infectious disease and/or contagion. These films are generally in the science fiction mold and have a strong propensity to cross over into the thriller or horror realms. The number of characters involved and the spread of the phenomenon at the heart of the story can vary wildly, ranging from a single infected individual (such as in "The Quatermass Xperiment" for example) to an epidemic or even pandemic spread of the disease (Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion" would be a classic example).

Regarding zombie movies, the "Infection" Tag will mainly be applied to stories whose dynamics align with the points cited above, either by emphasizing the medical-biological component or by focusing on the contagion theme. Similar considerations apply to the supernatural aspect as well, such as when vampirism or demonic possession are envisioned along the lines of an infectious disease (examples include 1958's "Dracula" and 1987's "Prince of Darkness").

Examples

  • Literature (fiction): "The Last Man" (Mary Shelley, 1826), "The Andromeda Strain" (Michael Crichton, 1969), "Doomsday Book" (Connie Willis, 1992).
  • Videogames: "Miasmata" (2012), "Plague Inc." (2012), "Bloodborne" (2015)
