Plot
Egyptologist Matthew Corbeck is so entirely devoted to archeology, he doesn’t think twice about neglecting his pregnant wife. But discovering the tomb of Queen Kara, who yearns to come back to life, will have incredible repercussions on the professor’s life.
In fact, 18 years after the discovery, the stars finally align to allow for Kara’s return. The malicious queen gradually takes possession of Corbeck’s daughter (it was no coincidence that her birth coincided with the exploration of the burial chamber), compelling her to carry out a resurrection ritual.
Anyone who gets in her way will have hell to pay.
Do not approach the Nameless One. Lest your soul be withered!
Critique
4Mike Newell directs a stale, horror-tinged drama based on a loose adaptation of “The Jewel of Seven Stars” (1903) by Bram Stoker (not exactly a masterpiece, to tell the truth), filled with characters who are barely fleshed out and even less interesting.
The idea of integrating sick little subplots – incest, obsession with dead people – doesn’t help the story, which seems timid due to faint-hearted cinematography and a lead actor who’s not really a good fit for the genre. Its only saving graces are a couple of bloody deaths and some murky opening scenes (credit mainly going to Jack Cardiff’s evocative cinematography). Otherwise, crickets.
Outstandingly weird scene: Dr. Corbeck pounding on the mummy with his fists.
Forgettable.
