Plot
An amorphous creature emerges from a small meteorite that crashes near a Pennsylvania town and begins absorbing all organic matter it encounters in its path. The organism is a sort of pinkish “material [that] absorbs flesh on contact like an acid“, and its movements incite panic throughout the local population.
Steve, a young eyewitness to the destructive potential inherent in the alien menace, finally manages to convince law enforcement officials of the gravity of the situation after a string of unsuccessful attempts. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be an effective method to halt the deadly enemy’s progress, as it continues growing in proportion to the number of victims it absorbs.
When all hope seems lost, Steve comes up with a winning idea.
It's assimilating his flesh at a frightening speed.
Critique
4.5“The Blob” is a typical example of Cold-War sci-fi that was popular in American theaters during the 1950s. In fact, the figure of the blob, an unstoppable phagocytotic mass coming from “out there”, has been cited by numerous critics as a symbol of America’s paranoid fear of communist contagion.
Beyond any (more or less tangible) metaphorical meanings of the film, it has to be acknowledged that overall it seems to have aged poorly – even if we’re accustomed to the usual massive doses of naivete typical of sci-fi from that era, we’re still faced with an inert, dialogue-heavy movie, weighed down by all-too-forgettable lines and a cast of characters that’s anything but memorable – a prime example is the irritating Sergeant Jim, a police officer with a “brilliant military past”, whose sole function is to discredit anything the main character suggests.
Steve McQueen, in one of the first significant roles of his career, offers a basically nondescript performance in the role of a high-school student (a bit of a stretch, given the actor was nearly 30) grappling with an extraordinary situation.
Modest special effects make the gelatinous alien lifeform more threatening in theory than in reality, although the scene where it bursts into the projection room still manages to make a decent impression.

Trivia
- It’s not the first time a shapeless, advancing enemy threatens humanity in a sci-fi film: in fact, in “X the Unknown” (1956), a phagocytotic mass quite similar to the blob is described.
- The movies being shown in the theater invaded by the blob are “Daughter of Horror” (1955) and “The Robot and the Vampire” (1952). (The latter subsequently becoming famous with the following titles: “My Son, the Vampire” and “Mother Riley Meets the Vampire”).
- In one scene, it’s possible to make out a poster for “The Robot and the Vampire,” but it’s actually a cleverly altered poster for “Forbidden Planet” (1956).
