Blob

Author: Serena Debegnach
Shapeless, (seemingly) organic mass whose slow but insatiable spread threatens catastrophic consequences, given its main distinguishing characteristic is a marked tendency to plow ahead, phagocytizing everything in its path.

With a gelatinous - or, less frequently, sludgy - consistency, these roving blobs generally hail from outer space, although there's no lack of cases in which they're the result of human action (e.g., heinous biochemical experimentation, unforeseen consequences of industrial pollution, reckless handling of mutagenic substances, etc.).

In a broader sense, this Tag also includes films in which individuals stricken by some disgusting degenerative process eventually transform into amorphous monstrosities with disturbing enzymatic properties.

Examples

  • Cinema/Television: "X the Unknown" (Leslie Norman, 1956), "Caltiki, the Immortal Monster" (Riccardo Freda, 1959), "Child's Play" (Val Guest, 1984).
  • Literature (fiction): "The Quatermass Experiment" (Nigel Kneale, 1959); "The Clone" (Theodore L. Thomas, Kate Wilhelm, 1965); "The Blob that Ate Everyone" (R.L. Stine, 1997).

The table below includes only the films we’ve already reviewed, filtered by the current Tag. We know many important titles are still missing: they’ll come in time. Some features are reserved for our Patreon supporters.
