Plot
In California’s High Desert, military scientists in sector E of top-secret Station 3 have developed the “Satan Bug”, a biological weapon that could rapidly wipe out all of humanity.
The pathogen is soon stolen by a deranged megalomaniac who demands they immediately dismantle Station 3 or face the annihilation of the human race (“Mankind must abolish war, or war will abolish mankind“).
Desperate, the base’s leaders seek help from Lee Barrett, a bold, incorruptible former military intelligence agent with his own history at Station 3.

Critique
6Seasoned director John Sturges turns Alistair MacLean’s novel “The Satan Bug” (1962) into a decent sci-fi thriller infused with high anxiety linked to the development of biological weapons destined for warfare.
The plot maintains tension and interest throughout the entire film, even though the screenplay falters, especially towards the end, throwing in a couple of cursory resolutions which aren’t even very plausible – finding the location of the attack seems a bit artificial, as does Barrett’s unbelievable gut instincts.
As for the actors – beyond a fine George Maharis who diligently dives into the role of the conscientious protagonist, two supporting actors stand out: the great Dana Andrews and the blonde Anne Francis, the unforgettable Altaira in the 1956 “Forbidden Planet“.
