Underground

In the realm of cinema, the term "underground" is generally used to describe films produced with different goals and techniques compared to those of traditional films. These avant-garde and proudly independent products are largely unknown to the average moviegoer, but provide satisfaction and pleasure to a niche audience and completists.

This Tag aims to unite a series of works which can be traced back to a distinctive genre of underground films which arose in Germany between the 1980s and '90s, within the broader realm of independent horror. Among the elements commonly shared by the various films in this category, we would cite:

• a minimal budget and second-rate technical/artistic quality;
• a certain experimental ambition;
• an extremely and intentionally disturbing nature (heightened violence, perverse sex, overabundance of scenes designed to provoke discomfort or disgust, etc.);
• a not very uplifting view of the world, seen as chaotic place imbued with turpitude (a vision sometimes accompanied by a vague hint of socio-relational critique).

 
In light of these characteristics, it's not surprising that the "Underground" Tag tends to dovetail with other Tags such as "Splatter" and "Trash".
