Plot
It’s the Victorian era and Dr. Abner Perry invents the “Iron Mole”, a futuristic drilling device capable of reaching the bowels of the planet in a few short hours.
The eccentric professor takes the project’s financier for a test run and they promptly end up getting lost in the depths of the earth where they encounter an incredible world filled with prehistoric fauna and ruled by an improbable race of oversized birds (the Mahars are basically telepathic pterodactyls!) who use their astounding mind-control powers to subjugate tribes of cavemen.
Aided by the fact that for unknown reasons, everyone speaks a smattering of Victorian English, the two visitors plant the seed of emancipation as they set out teaching the slaves the fine art of rebellion.
We've been on top of the earth long enough. It's about time we found out what's underneath!
Critique
4A year after “The Land that Time Forgot” (1975), Kevin Connor once again turns to the oeuvre of Edgar Rice Burroughs (the man who gave us Tarzan), to bring to life an adventure film for children. This time around, the result isn’t particularly auspicious. After a promising steampunk start, the plot degenerates into a thoroughly muddled, undisciplined fantasy mishmash.
Peter Cushing, a fine connoisseur of genre work, opts to ham it up and have a good time with his role (it’s no coincidence that the bizarre Dr. Perry is the sole character in tune with the spirit of the work), but his likeability can’t single-handedly redeem such a disjointed, inconsistent mess.
Makeup and special effects – cheap dime-store puppets and actors in cumbersome rubbery costumes – are nothing to write home about.
