Color Out of Space

Plot

Author: Alessandro Venditti
Adaptation: Kevan Houser

“West of Arkham, the hills rise wild and there are valleys with deep woods that no ax has ever cut. There are dark, narrow glens where the trees slope fantastically, where thin brooklets trickle without ever having caught the glimpse of sunlight“.

And right in the heart of this rugged, untouched natural setting is where Nathan Gardner decides to bring his wife and children, to live in his late father’s secluded farmstead. Somewhat of a bumbling oaf, the man embraces rural life, becoming part farmer and part alpaca breeder in hopes of cleansing his body and soul of the toxic effects of big-city life while strengthening his relationship with his wife, a cancer survivor.

Other than the inevitable bitching and moaning of his adolescent children, things seem to be pretty much on the right track until the night a mysteriously iridescent meteorite crashes on their property, and an alien something (a vague, unknowable, pulsating fuzz of color) takes up residence in the nearby well, contaminating the groundwater. The newly arrived entity’s influence spreads from that tainted water, provoking horrific changes in plants, electronics, animals, and eventually people as well (“It changes everything around it.” “Not just matter. Time as well. Time, it stretches around it…”).

This terrifying mutagenic process leads to a progressive mental and physical collapse that spares no one in the family.

Poisoning everything. Changing everything into something like the world it came from.

Almost thirty years after directing “Dust Devil” (1992), Richard Stanley’s feature film comeback is a pleasant surprise in and of itself, but the event is rendered even more intriguing by his decision to adapt one of H.P. Lovecraft’s best stories – “The Colour Out of Space” – which up to that point had inspired only a series of lame – if not downright disastrous – film adaptations. Both director and co-screenwriter, our man Stanley opts for a contemporary setting and takes more than a few liberties with the plot, but he attempts to remain faithful to the spirit and substance of the literary source.

A successful throwback on the whole, “Color Out of Space” reveals a nostalgic affection for a style of representing horror that’s gradually disappeared from today’s movies. The numerous allusions to the Cthulhu cycle (from references to Miskatonic University to the names of towns and characters), and, more generally, to great works of similar-themed fantasy from the early 20th century (William Hope Hodgson, Clark Ashton Smith, etc.), are nothing but the corollary of a profound assimilation of the Lovecraft universe (the well-known “Lovecraft Circle”).

At the heart of the matter obviously lies the concept of “cosmic horror”, near and dear to the Rhode Island recluse, a notion that translates into an impossibility of comprehending (first and foremost) and of communicating (secondarily) the aberrant reality that – unbeknownst to us – is wont to surround us, at the price of our sanity (“What touched this place cannot be quantified or understood by human science. It was just… a color out of space, a messenger from realms whose existence stuns the brain and numbs us with the gulfs that it throws open before our frenzied eyes“).

Far from illuminating the path, knowledge and technology constantly take on sinister echoes, what with the classic rebellion of the machine (with their anomalous behavior, cell phones and TV sets quickly become instruments of fear) and because investigating the unknown can’t help but lead us to an awful truth with nightmarish features (in which case it’s best to flee “into the peace and safety of a new dark age…”).

Decent performances from the cast, including Nicolas Cage, whose unhinged, over-the-top performance (especially in the third act) is for once justified by the extraordinary events that bedevil the Gardner family.

Dark and menacing, Colin Stetson’s soundtrack hits the mark.

Quotes

  • You don't get it, do you? It's not out there. It's in here. It's in the static. It's in the moisture. Up is down. Fast is slow. What's in here is out there, and what's out there is in here now. Comprendo?
  • "Yeah, I could hear them while I slept, shuffling around, chattering." [...] "What exactly am I supposed to be listening to?" "The people under the floor, dude. The aliens."
  • Poisoning everything. Changing everything into something like the world it came from.

Trivia

  • The writing on Benny’s bedroom wall (“No flesh shall be spared”) is a paraphrase of part of Mark 13:20 and serves a key function in “Hardware” (1990), Richard Stanley’s directorial debut.
  • In one scene from the film, hydrologist Ward Phillips (his name evokes Lovecraft’s 1927 short novel “The Case of Charles Dexter Ward”), is about to read Algernon Blackwood’s unsettling novella “The Willows” (1907).
  • “The Colour Out of Space” (1927) has had quite an impact on the Seventh Art, inspiring the following films: “Die, Monster, Die!” (Daniel Haller, 1965), “The Curse” (David Keith, 1987), “Die Farbe” (Huan Vu, 2010), “Virus: Extreme Contamination” (Domiziano Cristopharo, 2016).
