Plot
In a vaguely defined future following a nuclear conflict, the planet’s environmental equilibrium is completely upended. Entire cities have been engulfed by desert, and in many areas the air has become toxic and unbreathable.
Back from an off-world tour of duty, space marine Moses “Hard Mo” Baxter purchases the scrapped remains of a robot scavenged from the isolated, irradiated wasteland. Clueless as to the lethal consequences in store, Mo gives the cyborg head to his artist girlfriend who uses it in one of her metal sculptures.
Unfortunately, the wreckage turns out to be the remains of the MARK-13, a biomechanical android created for military purposes and equipped with lethal weapons. The robot reactivates, initiating an auto-repair sequence in the unsuspecting girl’s apartment. Once it rebuilds itself, it starts doing exactly what it was programmed to do: terminate human life. Will any flesh be spared?
No flesh shall be spared.
Critique
6.5First-time director Richard Stanley, adapting a comic story by the Steve MacManus/Kevin O’Neill team (“Shok!” 1981), brings to the big screen a fine example of post-apocalyptic sci-fi characterized by an extremely personal directorial style. Despite a rather meager budget, “Hardware” succeeds in its modest undertaking of presenting a worthy representation of a squalid reality dominated by decay and confusion, a world where dirty, revolting characters wander around with physical and mental impairments caused by the teratogenic effects of radioactive pollution.
To better depict the reigning anarchy of such a dystopic future, the South African director cultivates a distinctly cyberpunk esthetic. Highly interesting elements of the film include evocative art direction, distinctive use of color (red filters and warm tones vividly depict the scorching heat of the sweltering, dusty climate), and dazzling editing.
Among apocalyptic touches – Biblical references and symbolism abound – and moments marked by a semi-experimental surrealism, a deep-seated pessimism that sees mankind as the root cause of its own ills shines through (keep in mind that the MARK-13 isn’t the classic android gone mad, but rather a military weapon intentionally programmed to kill).
Worth another look.
More Info
- Based on the comic story "Shok!" (1981) by Steve MacManus & Kevin O'Neill
Quotes
- "F*****g bunch of shit, what these people are doing to the f*****g world." "It´s the same every time man. The minute I´m back on Earth, I just wanna be out in space again."
- No flesh shall be spared.
Trivia
- Several cameos by noted personalities from the world of music: Fields of the Nephilim frontman Carl McCoy is the scavenger (“Nomad”) who recovers the scrapped robot, Lemmy (aka Ian Fraser Kilmister) of the band Motörhead is the taxi driver, and Iggy Pop provides the voice of profane radio DJ Angry Bob.
- The robot’s name is a direct reference to a Biblical passage from the Gospel of Mark. The menacing sentence cited in the film (“No flesh shall be spared”) is very similar to part of Mark 13:20.
