Plot
Following a tortuous voyage, Jonathan Harker arrives in Transylvania to assist ancient vampire Count Dracula in purchasing a house in the London area. After happening to notice a photo of a young woman named Lucy Westenra, the count decides to buy the ancient Carfax abbey, located a short distance from the girl’s residence.
Arriving in England by sea, Dracula fixates on poor Lucy because she bears a striking resemblance to his long-ago wife. He plans on turning her into a vampire in order to have his lost companion back in his arms (or at least, her alter-ego). The unfortunate girl’s fiancé will put up a fight, aided by a courageous expert who’ll do anything just to destroy the Nosferatu.
They're vampires, we have to destroy them!
Critique
4.5Master of TV horror Dan Curtis produced and directed this listless adaptation of Bram Stoker’s immortal “Dracula” (1897). Screenwriter Richard Matheson, armed with heavy-duty pruning shears, does his best to cut the novel’s complexity down to comply with the prohibitive requirements typical of TV productions by eliminating a good number of characters, toning down the psychology, and making forgettable changes to the storyline – the vampire’s questionable resounding entrances.
Cast: Jack Palance is a wooden and miserable Dracula, a pathetic creature, who, despite his phenomenal strength, gives the impression that he’s recuperating from some type of paralysis. Davenport’s Van Helsing is completely flat and uninspiring, just like practically every one of the supporting characters. There’s some nice atmosphere thanks to a subtle cinematography and a commendable attention to detail in the interior sets.
Blood and gore take a holiday.
