Plot
In 2017, after violating the conception law, the Brennicks are arrested and incarcerated in a high-security facility run by the powerful Men-Tel Corporation. It’s a 33-level subterranean structure in the middle of the desert, run by an inhibited humanoid working for an artificial intelligence.
Once inside, the prisoners are stripped and forced to swallow “intestinators” – automatic behavior modification devices that activate as needed, causing inmates intense pain (even killing them, if necessary). As time goes by, John Brennick becomes increasingly tempted to attempt an impossible escape… but not before finding his beloved wife though, a woman who clearly has influence over the prison director.

Critique
4.5The cinematic equivalent of junk food, Stuart Gordon’s “Fortress” suffers mainly from a lack of gray matter: classic dystopian sci-fi themes such as overpopulation and loss of individual freedoms serve as only a pretext for a trite story that relies heavily on violent entertainment clichés: fights between inmates, sadistic torture, domineering AI, etc.
The cast doesn’t help, especially considering the fact that the film is anchored by the typically one-note Christopher Lambert and a barely adequate Kurtwood Smith – his “RoboCop” days seem so long ago! We also get an improbably shaggy-haired Jeffrey Combs in the role of a nerdy, self-proclaimed “gadget genius”. Other than that, flimsy logic, a shaky relationship between cause and effect, and general simple-mindedness reign supreme.
The special effects, a bit on the splatter side, are pretty decent at least.
