Frankenstein’s Army

Dutch sci-fi horror by “concept artist” Richard Raaphorst, in his debut directing effort (if you don’t count a handful of negligible shorts).

The result is pretty decent: his decision to use the found-footage technique was a result of budgetary limitations and, beyond a few inevitable plot stretches and a couple of excessively muddled sequences, doesn’t detract from its pure entertainment pleasure. The film puts its best foot forward in the inventive depiction of all the monstrosities crammed into the movie – a real dieselpunk-style bestiary.

A convincing Karel Roden turns his Victor into a raving and genuinely obsessed mad doctor. Among his countless moments of madness, who could forget the sequence in which he fuses the brains of a Communist and a Nazi together in order to produce a creature capable of uniting the two opposites (“I can make them stop. I can make them understand each other“).

Entertaining in its own way.
