Halloween II

The sequel to “Halloween” (2007) is an extremely interesting slasher film that clearly bears its director’s imprint.

Free of the restrictive production constraints that had somewhat reined him in during the earlier film, this time Zombie fully unleashes his macabre dream world and turns out a surreal, visionary work characterized by a glaring disregard for logic (nightmare and reality end up being one and the same, a fact that justifies the calculated relaxation of the link between cause and effect seen in several scenes). The true protagonist of this film is Laurie’s shattered mind, to the point that one begins to suspect that Myers is nothing more than the horrific projection of a girl on the precipice of madness.

Another major theme of the film is its criticism of the system, particularly demonstrated through the character of Dr. Loomis (“I’m selling the sizzle, not the steak“) and the establishment he embodies. The director rails against the cynical, social-climbing mindset prevailing in today’s capitalistic society, without forgetting to launch a heavy jab at the hypocritical world of sensationalist mass media.

Not nearly conventional enough to be appreciated by the masses or at the box office.
