Plot
In 1880, Professor Lindenbrook of the University of Edinburgh, examining a rather strange lava fragment, becomes convinced that a passage exists leading from a recess in the vent of an Icelandic volcano all the way to the center of the earth.
Excited by the scientific value of such a possibility, the professor communicates what he’s discovered to an expert volcanologist in Stockholm who turns out to be a man of dubious professional ethics. Fearing – justly – that his scientific colleague is trying to steal his discovery, Lindenbrook decides to head to Iceland where, with the assistance of a devoted student, he hopes to undertake the perilous voyage into the bowels of the planet.
Natural obstacles, ravenous wild beasts, and unforeseen enemies will make the journey incredibly arduous.

Critique
7Enjoyable adaptation of the Jules Verne classic of the same name, “Journey to the Center of the Earth” is an excellent example of a late 1950s sci-fi/adventure film.
The Walter Reisch/Charles Brackett screenplay (the latter was also the producer), although diverging more than a little from the plot of the book, succeeds in its far-from-easy task of preserving the spirit of Verne’s work, emphasizing a blend of mystery and wonder along with a hopeful and rational notion of technological/scientific progress that goes back to the Positivist tradition of the early 1800s. The film is also not without a few brief humorous interludes, among which the hilarious scene where they meet the duck stands out.
As far as the cast is concerned, James Mason’s amusing and engaging performance deserves a nod. Five years after his work in Disney’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” (1954), he again proves he’s a perfect fit for the genre.
Extremely imaginative and evocative art direction.
