Plot
In the northeastern English countryside, the government is experimenting with a new ultrasonic radiation technology that promises to rid plants of insects and parasites. The device works by altering “the most primitive forms of nervous systems” – too bad it also affects newborns as well as the recently deceased (whose brains retain a residual neuronal activity), who reawaken ravenous and aggressive.
A young hippie, realizing the gravity of the situation, does everything possible to avert disaster. Hindered by bureaucratic stupidity and a fascist police inspector, the young man’s efforts are doomed to miserable failure.

Critique
6Horror movies have long utilized the walking dead as an allegory to confront weighty social and political themes (slavery, colonialism, consumerism, etc.).
In this movie, Spanish director Jorge Grau uses them to produce a little gem of environmental sci-fi with an anti-establishment message (authority being represented by a close-minded police inspector and a moronic judge). With the opening shots lingering on the awful effects of pollution, it’s instantly apparent that the film’s focus is ecology, and the hippie protagonist who longs for a peaceful, uncontaminated natural environment quickly becomes its spokesman.
Technically strong, the film avails itself of Giannetto De Rossi’s visual effects – in other words, superior quality is a guarantee – and Francisco Sempere’s icy cinematography.
A classic zombie movie in the vein of George A. Romero.
