Plot
The “Nightingale 229”, a medical response spaceship, receives an SOS from a distant planet, seemingly sent by a certain Karl Larson, with whom the vessel’s chief medical officer once had a stormy relationship.
At any rate, after overcoming considerable difficulties to reach the signal’s origin, the crew recovers a single mysterious individual who claims to be Larson’s son, but in reality appears barely human (he has phenomenal strength and demonstrates astonishing physical regenerative capabilities), due to the evil influence of a powerful alien artifact – containing ninth-dimensional matter! – which he smuggles aboard and which alters his mind and body, transforming him into a sort of malicious demigod.
Misery is in store for the Nightingale’s passengers.

Critique
5.5Mercilessly panned by critics, Walter Hill’s unacknowledged sci-fi film (the pseudonym “Thomas Lee” received director’s credit) was a colossal box-office bomb – its budget was somewhere around 90 million dollars. However, despite being the worse for wear due to its turbulent (to say the least) production and post-production phases, it still ends up being a decent example of turn-of-the-century space opera.
Less visionary than Paul Anderson’s equally troubled “Event Horizon” (1997), “Supernova” is held together by a plot that, despite being vague and disjointed at times (or maybe by virtue of those very qualities), manages to be appealing and worthy of interest in its own way.
Notable from a cinematography point of view and supported by top-notch special effects.

- Due to a head-spinning series of misunderstandings and disputes during production, a grand total of four directors worked on the film: Geoffrey Wright (fired before filming began), Walter Hill (oversaw the lion’s share of the filming), Jack Sholder (who completed the work), and Francis Ford Coppola (whose request not to be credited was granted).
- Finishing 75 million dollars in the red, “Supernova” makes the list of films with the largest losses in the history of cinema.
- As for the ending, the alternate version was definitely better.
