Superstition

Never execute a devil-worshipping witch if you want to avoid her post-mortem wrath! No matter how often this hoary cliché gets recycled, supernatural horror films will apparently never get tired of regurgitating it. Still, lack of originality aside, “Superstition” remains an enjoyable work, if you like films that know how to make the most of a creative string of incredibly violent, gory murders.

Overall, Roberson employs a nimble touch and a good sense of pacing to direct this purely entertaining little film that tips its hat to its “made in Italy” forerunners (Mario Bava, Lucio Fulci, and Dario Argento are repeatedly alluded to) and allows horror fans to have a good time as long as they don’t dwell too much on the schlocky details littered pretty much throughout the film (first prize goes to the crucifix that apparently opens locked doors instantly, and coming in at a close second is the rather remarkable tendency of dead bodies to drop from the ceilings).

Finally, we’d mention David Gibney’s spot-on soundtrack, and the highlight of the film which has to be the scene where the priest is killed by a circular saw run amok.
