Terror Train

Plot

At a New Year’s Eve frat party, a bunch of friends led by the unscrupulous Doc Manley hatch a despicable prank targeting shy, awkward pledge Kenny Hampson (he thinks he’s about to have his first sexual experience, but instead discovers an old woman’s rotting corpse planted in the bed). The traumatic “prank” leaves him a psychological mess, to say the least.

Three years after that dirty deed, the same college students celebrate graduation with a costume party on a train. Prior to boarding, a mysterious individual kills one of the young men, then “borrowing” the victim’s Groucho Marx mask, the killer slips into the party unnoticed.

Despite being an insipid, unimaginative thriller, “Terror Train” managed to earn a prominent spot among the tidal wave of 1980s slasher movies. The recognition is hardly deserved given that first-time director Roger Spottiswoode (a former film editor) demonstrates a complete lack of flair as he manages an improbable plot entirely devoid of anything remotely edgy or innovative (just like in any self-respecting slasher film, sex is the root cause of every evil here).

The claustrophobic atmosphere and the presence of a young Jamie Lee Curtis aren’t enough to keep this leaky ship afloat, and by the time it finally does set sail, the film’s nearly over.

Strange casting choice with famous illusionist David Copperfield.
