The Shining

Plot

Author: Alessandro Venditti
Adaptation: Kevan Houser

Writer and former teacher Jack Torrance accepts a five-month caretaker stint at the isolated Overlook Hotel, an imposing structure which closes to the public during the harsh Rocky Mountain winter.

Completely unfazed by the hotel’s violent and bloody past (it was supposedly built on an ancient “Indian burial ground”), Torrance eagerly relocates to Colorado with his wife and young son to take the seasonal job, hoping the winter solitude will help him overcome writer’s block and finally produce a new novel.

Unfortunately, he quickly succumbs to a progressive madness that causes him to manifest increasingly disturbing behavior, eventually turning violent towards his family. His young son Danny’s psychic ability (a gift known as “the shining”) enables him to tune into the supernatural forces permeating the hotel, and the boy quickly realizes the grave danger posed by his father’s downward mental spiral.

When weather conditions worsen, leaving the family snowbound with all communication to the outside world abruptly cut off, it begins to feel more and more like they’re caught in a deadly trap…

Come and play with us, Danny. Forever... and ever... and ever.

In this superb reworking of Stephen King’s horror novel of the same name, Stanley Kubrick picks and chooses elements from the book that best suit his purpose, reassembling them to deliver his own personal, albeit pessimistic, vision of reality and human nature. For Kubrick, the human soul has always harbored irrationality and brutality, which explains why good Stanley took the liberty of adding domestic violence to the list of Torrance’s transgressions, even though such details are totally absent from the literary source (King publicly disapproved of this decision).

With that in mind, the Overlook Hotel’s sinister influence can be seen as a sort of catalyst that uncovers these negative traits that normally simmer somewhere deep inside all of us (perhaps with the exception of children, for whom the director seems to harbor some hope) and brings them to the surface. This interpretation lines up with the importance conferred on psychoanalytic theories on subconscious impulses and drives and the Oedipus complex, as well as the weight given to the numerous mythological and folkloristic allegories permeating the entire film – from the titan Cronus’s filicide and the legend of the Minoan labyrinth, up to the child-eating ogres and wolves from the pages of European fairy tales.

Rich with atmospheric long takes (including the famous use of the Steadicam through the hotel’s claustrophobic hallways), powerful in its ceaseless pursuit of geometric harmony and symmetry, and supported by a suitably oppressive main theme, “The Shining” is a technically dazzling work seemingly tailor-made to drop the viewer into a dimension of algid, existential discomfort.

Jack Nicholson’s histrionic performance has rightly earned him a place in cinematic history.

  • Things that happen leave other kind of traces behind. Not things that anyone can notice. But things that people who shine can see. Just like they can see things that haven't happened yet...
  • Hello, Danny. Come and play with us. Come and play with us, Danny. Forever... and ever... and ever.
  • Because, for some people, solitude and isolation can, of itself, become a problem.

Trivia

  • The cursed room was number 217 in the pages of the novel, but fearing a negative reaction from future guests, the management of Oregon’s Timberline Lodge (used for exterior shots of the “Overlook Hotel”) reportedly requested a change, and the non-existent room 237 was used for the movie instead.
