Plot
The year is 2019. A heavenly body dubbed “Galileo’s Child” is on a collision course with Earth. Urgent intervention is needed to avert an impact that would have apocalyptic consequences for our planet. The military wants to use tactical nukes and strategic missiles to pulverize the approaching “renegade moon”. Dr. Dana Shaw has a different plan, however. She proposes drilling into the asteroid’s surface to plant a series of explosive charges that when detonated would alter its lethal trajectory.
The world’s governments approve the scientist’s plan, and so a group of miners and explosives experts are sent to the surface of the alien body to start their dreary, difficult work. As bad luck would have it, the crew’s drilling awakens a hibernating, nightmarish creature that wastes little time demonstrating its predatory instincts and carnivorous skills.

Critique
6Gary J. Tunnicliffe, veteran special effects technician, makes his directing debut with this made-for-TV movie, an enjoyable sci-fi horror romp that shamelessly tosses in exobiology and doomsday elements. The result isn’t half bad. Good pacing, decent characterizations (even if a bit stereotypical), commendable SFX, clever, effective dialogue including some classic barbs aimed at the military’s obtuseness (“We’ve examined the military option… you see, the ‘bomb and balls brigade’ didn’t have a clue. They just saw a problem and they wanted to blow it up“).
What about the men entrusted with the honor and duty of saving Earth? Well, let’s just say that they’re light years away from your typical heroes. Dr. Shaw finds herself surrounded by cynical mercenaries out to make a buck by scavenging platinum, displaying more interest in playing video games or otherwise goofing off than in working together to get the critical job done (“Atmosphere? It’s a little dusty, but hey, I’m indoors, so I don’t give a damn“).
The fate of humanity isn’t exactly in the best of hands…
